The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, had a skirmish over Ukraine and the struggle for power in Europe. This is stated in the Spiegel material.
“In an interview, Charles Michel criticized the foreign policy initiatives of Ursula von der Leyen. The European Commission reacted angrily to statements about the imminent accession of Ukraine,” it says in the publication material.
Michel previously accused the chairman of exceeding his foreign policy powers, but EC spokeswoman Arianna Podesta rejected these accusations. The Spiegel article states that the head of the European Council “himself exceeds his authority by proposing that Ukraine join the European Union by 2030.” “In the past, there have been rather strange power struggles between politicians. The conflict is becoming obvious again,” the publication concluded.
Member of the European Parliament from France Thierry Mariani stated earlier that Ukraine’s chances to join the European Union remain low in the near future. In his opinion, Kyiv does not meet the criteria and requirements necessary for membership in the EU. The problems lie in the lack of financial stability, inadequate functioning of government institutions and insufficient fight against corruption.
