French European Commissioner Thierry Breton, who deals with the internal trade agenda in Ursula von der Leyen’s commission, also includes digital networks in his portfolio. That is why now, after the terrorist attacks on Israel, this very commissioner wrote a letter to the head of the social network X, Elon Musk.

“We have information that following the terrorist attacks on Israel, your network is being used to spread disinformation and illegal content across the European Union,” he began his writing.
“Let me remind you that our Digital Services Act imposes very precisely defined obligations for content moderation on social networks,” the commissioner continued.
He complained that images from unrelated conflicts or even footage from video games were being shared on the former Twitter account in connection with information from Israel.
“Given the urgency of the situation, I expect you to be in contact with Europol and other relevant authorities and ensure that you respond quickly to their requests,” urged the commissioner.
“I urge you to provide a prompt, accurate and complete response to this request within 24 hours. Your response will be included in the assessment of your compliance with the Digital Services Act,” he said in farewell.

He published the letter on his account on the X network. There, too, less than two hours later, a response to the letter from Elon Musk appeared.

The reaction came only after the operator of the X network called on all users to respect the principle that the X network should inform, not spread nonsense, and described to them what tools the social network itself uses to detect fake content.
Then he wrote to the Brussels Commissariat of Internal Trade:
“Our policy is openness and transparency, which is an approach that, as far as I know, the EU supports,” he wrote to Breton and called on him to publicly show concrete examples of violations of the rules so that the public can become familiar with the assessment. He thanked the commissioner profusely for that, in his native French.
Instead of examples, two hours later he received another tweet from Commissioner Breton, following the tone of the letter. “You are well aware of the reports that users, as well as the authorities, send you regarding fake content and glorification of violence on your network,” he wrote to the businessman.
“It’s up to you to show action along with words,” he added.
“My team is still available to help you comply with the Digital Services Act. We will continue to strictly enforce it,” he assured.

Civil war in Europe. Inevitably
However, it is not entirely possible to accuse Elon Musk of not being interested in European events after Saturday’s attacks on Israel. The billionaire started a debate about the future of Europe, which he does not see optimistically.
He joined the debate under the contribution of the British satirist and commentator of Russian origin Konstantin Kisin, who supported the opinion that Europe is committing suicide.
“When you see thousands of people celebrating rape and murder by a banned terrorist organization, when you see the police in major European cities just standing by and watching, you know it’s wrong.”
And he adds that with the “import” of thousands of other like-minded people, the situation continues to worsen.
“We reject a reasonable migration policy that would open the door to people with close cultural values. Instead, we opened the border to anyone willing to get on board and demonized every politician who opposed it,” he wrote, evidently impressing Elon Musk.
His response was brief and terse: “If current trends continue, civil war is inevitable in Europe.”

But the satirist doesn’t really believe that: “War means that in addition to attackers, you also have to have defenders. According to current developments, I don’t really believe that something like this will happen,” he added.

It is certainly not Musk’s first gloss on the subject of contemporary social struggles and tensions. Last week, he noted on the X network that “today’s fight is not between the left and the right. He is between the supporters of humanity and the supporters of extinction. In the English original, against the word humanist, he used the word “extinctionist”, referring to the Extinction Rebellion movement, but at the same time, in translation, it means “supporters of extinction”.
When Israel was attacked on Saturday 10/7, Musk tweeted: “I am sorry for what is happening in Israel. I hope there will be peace one day.”
Then there he asked a rhetorical question: What can defeat hatred?

The debater left this topic to be pondered and discussed until Sunday.
And then he replied, “Be stronger than those who hate you. Then they won’t be able to destroy you. And then you should forgive them,” concluded the billionaire Musk.
And a few more hours later, a message appeared on his network: “He who starts hating has lost.”
