/ world today news/ The European Commission cannot take action to stop payments to Bulgaria based on the monitoring mechanism.

This is what the European Commissioner in charge of audit and the fight against abuse Algirdas Shemeta said on the occasion of yesterday’s recommendation of the European Parliament to reconsider the allocation of money from the European funds to Bulgaria and Romania: “I have to say simply that the cooperation and verification mechanism is not directly related to the spending of European funds. This means that we cannot take action such as suspension of payments based on the findings of the monitoring report.”

Shemeta added that the European Commission will continue to work with the Bulgarian authorities to strengthen the management and control of European funds. The Commissioner for Regional Policy, Johannes Hahn, will soon be in Bulgaria for a seminar on the subject. This is also the way the European Commission sees its next steps for better spending of European funds in Bulgaria, pointed out Algirdas Shemeta, BNR reported.
