European Commissioner Calls for Reflection on Maintaining Order in France Amid Rising Violence

A EUROPEAN COMMISSIONER ADVOCATES A “REFLECTION” ON THE MAINTENANCE OF ORDER IN FRANCE

European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders expressed concern on Wednesday about the “very high level of violence” in France and advocated “a reflection” on the organization of policing, in an interview on Belgian radio La Première (RTBF).

“In France, which has been very striking over the years, you have seen the yellow vests, the pension reform, now these riots, each time there is a very high level of violence”, declared the Belgian commissioner, questioned about the urban violence which punctuated the country last week.

“The very high level of violence, we really have to examine it because it poses a problem, sometimes in the behavior of a certain number of police officers, we see it through the dramatic situations which may have occurred, and also through the behavior of people, who have the right to demonstrate freely – it’s a fundamental right -, but not to loot shops, not to destroy businesses, not to destroy public material, “added Didier Reynders. “So this is where there is really a reflection to be had, also on the way of organizing the maintenance of order”, he continued.
