The proposal is controversial. The status of gas and nuclear energy was the subject of vigorous discussions between European heads of state and government last month during the European Council in Brussels.
France and a dozen other countries are defending nuclear energy because it could help the EU’s transition to climate neutrality by 2050.
Germany and Austria are categorically against, because of the nuclear waste. The new German government, including the Greens, is burning down the proposal. Economy and Climate Protection Minister Robert Habeck and Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (both Greens) have already indicated that Germany cannot support the proposal.
Habeck talks about “greenwashing” and Lemke is a bit tougher. “I think it’s totally wrong that the European Commission plans to consider nuclear energy as a sustainable economic activity,” she responds.
