The President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, announced on Friday that 137 billion euros due to Poland, which Brussels has frozen until Warsaw does not ensure compliance with the rule of law, will be unblocked.
An official decision on this will be made in the new week, Leyena said, noting that the new Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, has taken important steps to end the confrontation with Brussels.
Poland’s previous government, formed by the national conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, had a sometimes difficult relationship with the leadership of the European Union (EU) and, amid accusations that Poland threatened the independence of judges, Brussels had frozen funds given to Warsaw to help the economy recover from the Covid- 19 pandemics.
EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders has previously said that the new Polish government has expressed a “clear commitment” to repair the damage caused by the PiS government.
