BRUSSELS, December 22 (Reuters)-The European Commission recommended on Tuesday that the travel ban imposed on the UK by EU countries to contain a new strain of the coronavirus should be ended in order to restore freight and necessary travel to allow people to return home.
The proposal will be submitted to the EU ambassador later on Tuesday, suggesting that non-essential travel to and from the UK should not be encouraged. However, the Executive Committee stated that those who go to their country of residence should be allowed to travel as long as they undergo a new crown test or a 10-day quarantine.
Didier Reynders, EU justice executive, said in a statement: “The one-size-fits-all travel ban should not prevent thousands of EU and British citizens from returning home.”
These proposals are aimed at establishing common rules within the EU, and ambassadors will consider adopting them on Tuesday. However, border control is determined by national policies, so each EU country can have its own rules. (Finish)
