Europe increases vaccination to prevent cancer. EC
The European Commission (EC) announces new measures with vaccines to prevent cancer. The EC alleges that cancer is diagnosed every year in around 2.7 million people in the European Union and this figure is expected to increase in the future.
The commission assures that around 40% of cancer cases in the EU can be prevented and insists that eThere are safe and effective vaccines that could save many lives.
The EC as part of the European Plan to Fight Cancer has incorporated new recommendations addressed to Member States for the cancer prevention through vaccination. The objective of the Plan is vaccinate 90% of girls and a significant number of boys against HPV by 2030. The Commission has dedicated the largest budget ever created to combat cancer, including €4 billion from the EU4Health program and other instruments.
The EC highlights that HPV vaccination coverage is well below 50% in many Member States. Also there is a significant lack of data on HBV vaccination rates.
