The European Disaster Relief Service is sending winter-proof emergency shelters and other aid to Kharkiv, Butsha and Rivne and the surrounding area. The metropolis of Kharkiv has been under fire for months since the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Russian soldiers wreaked havoc in Butja, a suburb of Kiev. Some residents have become homeless and are preparing for winter.
The shelters, together with the emergency shelter provided by the Romanians, must be able to accommodate up to 46,000 people. They are equipped with heating and beds, and some also have private toilets and other facilities.
Of the extra aid the EU is putting on the table, € 150 million is earmarked for education, food, clean water and protection against the winter cold for the most vulnerable people in Ukraine, says European Commissioner Janez Lenarcic. The remaining 25 million will go to Moldova.
