The former head of the Nature Protection Board (DAP), member of the Saeima, Andrejs Svilāns, admits in the TV24 program “On the Line” that the DAP has already drawn attention to the fact that this problem should have been worked on more intensively.
He also reveals that the official list of invasive plants in Latvia still includes only one species – Sosnovska latvānis, although in reality there are dozens of these species.

“Currently, within the LatViaNature project, the Nature Protection Board is working intensively on combating and limiting these other species as well. I really hope that my colleagues will be able to do what should have been done for years,” he admitted.
Svilāns emphasizes that everything possible is being done, but in order to successfully deal with it, a larger amount of funds is needed.
Unfortunately, there will be species that Latvia will not be able to deal with. One such, for example, is the Canadian goldfinch or goldfinch, which has already taken over large areas in Latvia.
“We have so much gold that, unfortunately, we may not be able to fight him,” the former DAP leader was forced to conclude.
It is the same with the Canadian elodea – a small plant found in water, in ditches.
It has already been reported that the EC has appealed to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) against six EU countries, including Latvia, for not preventing the introduction of invasive alien species harmful to European nature. The EC has taken action against Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Latvia and Portugal.
Invasive alien species are plants and animals that are accidentally or deliberately introduced into an area where they are not normally found.
Invasive alien species are one of the top five causes of biodiversity loss in Europe and worldwide. These are plants and animals that, as a result of human activity, are accidentally or intentionally introduced into a natural environment where they are not normally present.

They pose a serious threat to Europe’s native plants and animals and are estimated to cost the European economy €12 billion annually. Tackling invasive species is an important aspect of the EU’s efforts to halt biodiversity loss, as set out in the European Green Deal Communication and the European Biodiversity Strategy 2030.
The regulation includes measures to be taken across the EU for invasive alien species of concern in the EU. Six Member States have not developed, implemented and communicated to the EC an action plan to prevent the most important routes of introduction and spread of invasive alien species.
