EU countries have the task and responsibility to implement European sanctions, a spokesman for the European Commission said today at a press conference in response to a question related to the distributed report of the Center for the Study of Democracy. The document claims that the export of fuels from Bulgaria, produced from Russian oil, has contributed to one billion euros in revenue for Moscow.
“We have no data to share, we follow publicly available messages. When a problem is identified, we maintain contact with the relevant EU country. In general, we are in close contact with EU countries to ensure uniform application of the sanctions,” the spokesperson said.
Bulgaria received an exception from the general ban on imports of Russian oil into the EU. This exception was allowed to ensure security of supply in Bulgaria. Bulgaria is also provided with a discount for the export of certain processed petroleum products to countries outside the EU for reasons related to environmental protection and security, he explained.

These two exemptions are temporary and are scheduled to expire on December 31 next year, the spokesperson noted. He added that the EC is preparing a list of additional sanctions, providing more ways to avoid the circumvention of the restrictive measures imposed by the EU.
