This is a figure that has created quite a shock in the chemical industry. For the first time since the statistics were compiled, European chemicals have shown a trade deficit in the first half of this year.
Starting in March, what had been brewing since the beginning of the year materialized: imports of chemicals took precedence over exports to the European Union. And in the first six months of the year, Europe imported 5.6 billion euros more of products than it exported.
