European Championship fairy tale Ukraine continues, nightmare for Sweden

In Glasgow, Oleksandr Zinchenko opened the score on behalf of Ukraine. Even before half time, Emil Forsberg equalized with his fourth European Championship goal. In extra time, the Swede Marcus Danielson had to leave the field with a red card after a charge in the 99th minute. Dovbyk prevented a penalty shootout with his capital header.

Ukraine, which has never made it to the knockout stage of the European Championship before, will play against England in the quarter-finals on Saturday in Rome.

Nothing to lose

Ukraine had nothing to lose in Glasgow. The team of national coach Andrei Shevchenko could already be happy with a place in the last sixteen. The Eastern European formation lost in the group stage to the Netherlands (3-2) and Austria (1-0) and only won against the scoreless North Macedonia (2-1).

Sweden did better in the group stage. With 7 points, the team of national coach Janne Andersson went as group winner to the eighth finals. However, the Scandinavians could not fulfill the favorite role in the duel with Ukraine.

Optical superiority

Sweden had an optical advantage, but Ukraine was more dangerous in the switch. With a shot into the far corner, Zinchenko gave his team the lead in the 27th minute. Sweden’s big man Forsberg equalized in the 43rd minute with a deflected shot.

After the break, Forsberg first hit the post and then the crossbar. Serchi Sydorchuk hit the post on behalf of Ukraine. In the final phase, both teams pushed for extra time. After the red card for Danielson, Ukraine pushed a little more, but penalties seemed inevitable. Until Dovbyk struck: 2-1.
