Bernardos has offered a hopeful outlook for these mortgage holders, especially for those who renew their mortgages in February. After facing a year of increases in their dues, There is a possibility that, for the first time in a long time, these mortgage holders will see a reduction in their payments. This good news is due to the fact that the Euribor currently stands at around 3.6%, after having reached figures above 4% for much of last year. With the expectation that the ECB will begin to lower interest rates in the summer, a relief in mortgage payments is anticipated from February or March 2024.
This situation is part of the ECB’s framework of actions to achieve an average inflation in the euro zone close to 2%, a goal that has been achieved in recent months.
In the same program, Bernardos also commented on the planned increase in pensions in January, which is estimated to be 3.8%. However, he emphasized that what is fundamental for retirees is not so much the nominal increase in their pensions, but the real impact on their purchasing power. According to the economist, this aspect will not experience a significant improvement in 2024. On the other hand, Bernardos highlighted the complex situation of young people in the labor market, a sector of the population that is frequently marginalized in debates about economic policies.
