Sales of new cars fell last year to their lowest level since 1993, mainly due to the lack of parts.
The parts shortage plummeted car sales in Europe especially during the first half of 2022, reports the European car federation Acea.
At the beginning of this year, the Belgian automobile federation Febiac already pointed out that the car sales in our country by 2022 had fallen to the lowest level since 1995.
The European figures also show that Germany went against the grain last year. It was the only one of the four largest car markets in the EU to close 2022 with growth compared to the previous year. 1.1 percent more new passenger cars were sold. Sales fell in Italy (-9.7 percent), France (-7.8 percent) and Spain (-5.4 percent). In our country it was a decline of 4.4 percent.
It looks like this is a temporary setback. Since August last year, European sales figures have been higher than in the same month in 2021. In December there was an increase of 12.8 percent. In Belgium it was even slightly more than 20 percent.
Volkswagen Group remained the largest car group in the European Union last year, with a market share of 25.1 percent. For Stellantis with a market share of 19.7 percent and Renault Group with 10.6 percent.
