Europe wins the Laver Cup against teams from the rest of the world

Paris., Europe won the Laver Cup tennis tournament on Sunday against the rest of the world thanks to a victory by the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz over Taylor Fritz in the last duel of singles.

The Europeans entered the third and final day of the exhibition tournament in Berlin with an 8-4 disadvantage, but took advantage of the higher score from each victory on this third day.

Alcaraz, 21, who was competing in the Laver for the first time, beat his American rival 6-2, 7-5.

The four-time Grand Slam winner from Murcia was compared to the great Roger Federer, the driving force behind the Laver Cup, after his victory, a comparison that Alcaraz described as “impossible”. “I’m too far from that level. I hope to reach it one day,” he said.

After victories by the rest of the world in 2022 and 2023, Europe regains its dominance in this competition launched in 2017, which it has won five times, compared to two by the rest of the world.

Alcaraz won 6-2, 7-5, after German Alexander Zverev defeated Francis Tiafoe 6-7 (7/5), 7-5, 10/5.

Europe had won the doubles duel on Sunday, although it lost the first singles match, between the Russian Daniil Medvedev and the American Ben Shelton 6-7 (8/6), 7-5, 10/7, after a super tie-break at ten points.

On Friday, a win was worth one point, on Saturday two points, and on Sunday three points. The first of the two teams to get 13 points out of a possible 24 won the tournament.

It was the last time that the legendary Björn Borg for Europe and John McEnroe for the rest of the world were captains of their respective teams. Present since 2017, they will be replaced next year by the Frenchman Yannick Noah and the American André Agassi.
