The European Space Agency (ESA) believes the safest location for settlers could be under the surface of the Moon. They also believe caves on the moon can provide protection from radiation, micrometeorites, extreme temperatures, and perhaps even access to water ice deposits.
Against this backdrop, the European space agency is developing and testing autonomous robots which it hopes will provide new insights into conditions inside caves on the Moon.
DAEDALUS is the name of the autonomous robot, in the form of a ball measuring 46 cm. The ball will be lowered into the mouth of the cave from a long mooring rope and then use its own strength to roll.

The tether will also serve as a WiFi receiver that sends back the data collected by DAEDALUS. The cameras and sensors installed on the explorer robot will then map the interior of the cave, study the environment, and look for ice deposits.
