Europe has once again become the epicenter of the pandemic worldwide, leading some governments on the continent to consider re-imposing unpopular confinements in the run-up to Christmas and New Years, sparking debate over whether vaccines alone are sufficient to control the covid-19.
Europe accounts for more than half of the average infections of the past seven days globally and about half of the latest deaths, according to a tally by the news agency Reuters. These are the highest levels since April last year, when the coronavirus it swept Italy for the first time.
Governments and businesses are concerned that the pandemic prolonged derail a fragile economic recovery. Nations like Netherlands, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic are taking or planning measures to slow the spread of the disease.
