Europe / Spain – “Star Sembradores”: a Christmas declaration from the young people and the “gratitude” of the missionaries
Madrid (Agenzia Fides) – The “Star Sowers” initiative returns these days, the children announce Christmas with sticky “stars” and thank the missionaries for the contributions collected in October on the occasion of “Domund”, World Mission Sunday .
As Fides Agency has learned, today and tomorrow, on December 18 and 19, the official “dispatch” of stellar viewers takes place in different dioceses of Spain.
For those who cannot physically attend, a digital version will also be available, and was already tested last year due to the pandemic on the dedicated site where children can download and personalize their stars.
The initiative, which was born 41 years ago, from the intuition of Jesuit priest Zapier Eloundin and Sister Carmela Swans, includes children who have taken to the streets to bring the missionaries’ Christmas greetings, giving them sticky stars. From Madrid it then spread throughout Spain to reach, through Spanish missionaries, various countries of the world such as the Dominican Republic and Ethiopia.
“The Star Sows” is the most well-known and widespread activity of the Pontifical Society for Missionary Children. She intends to spread the love of the message to all children and at the same time prepare young people for the Advent and Christmas experience, and immediately after the Children’s Missionary Day. Last year, despite the pandemic, the use of digital media still allowed children to create their own digital star, which was later shared via WhatsApp, email or social media. This year, the digital option is preserved, even if several parishes have organized the Star Sawers office in existence, in compliance with established security measures.
