Office of MEP Cecilia Strada at the European Parliament
What motivated Cecilia Strada to organize a meeting focused on migration in Europe?
Website Editor: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Today we are very fortunate to have two esteemed guests with us for an interview regarding the topic of migration in Europe. Our first guest is Ms. Cecilia Strada, a Member of the European Parliament who has organized a meeting on this very important issue. Ms. Strada, please introduce yourself and tell us about what motivated you to organize such a meeting.
Cecilia Strada: Thank you for having me. My name is Cecilia Strada, and I am a Member of the European Parliament representing the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats. I have been committed to addressing the issue of migration in Europe for some time now, and I believe that open dialogue and collaboration between scholars, advocates, civil society organizations, and policymakers are crucial in finding effective solutions to this complex problem. The meeting today was designed to bring together experts from various fields to discuss different aspects of migration, including legal frameworks, challenges at borders, and the conditions in detention centers.
Website Editor: Our second guest is Ms. Andreina De Leo, a legal expert from ASGI (Association for Legal Studies on Immigration). Ms. De Leo, could you please tell us about the legal framework surrounding migration in Europe and the challenges that come with it?
Andreina De Leo: Of course. The situation regarding migration law in Europe is currently quite fragmented, with different policies and approaches implemented at the national level. This lack of harmonization often leads to challenges, as we see with the different treatment of asylum seekers and migrants across European countries. Additionally, the issue of detention centers raises serious concerns about the respect of human rights and the protection of vulnerable individuals. Today, we are discussing the need to develop a more cohesive legal framework that takes into account both the rights of migrants and the needs of the host countries.
Website Editor: Looking specifically at the challenges at land borders, we have two panelists who have extensive experience working with migrants and asylum seekers in Italy. Ms. Maddalena Avon and Mr. Ismail Swaiti, please share your insights on the situation at the borders in the Balkans and the challenges facing Italy in particular.
Maddalena Avon: Thank you
