Terror warnings in Europe have also led to increased security measures in the Vatican over the Christmas holidays. During the Pope’s Angelus prayer on Tuesday, more police surrounded St. Peter’s Square than last year.

Precautions were also taken in Austria. The police showed an increased presence around the churches and Christmas markets in the capital Vienna.

“You really have to be careful”

“In times when Jesus was born, it wasn’t very peaceful either. So, that’s nothing new. What’s good is that our executive branch is so vigilant and looking closely. I feel quite safe. But you really have to be careful.” said Christoph Schönborn, Archbishop of Vienna.

Authorities received information about terrorist attacks

German media had previously reported that authorities in Austria, Germany and Spain had received information about impending attacks by Islamist groups. These were planned for the celebrations at the end of the year.
