The European Commission could block e-commerce giant Amazon from buying robotic vacuum cleaner maker iRobot. The basis of everything is, of course, the possible reduction of competition. The other big problem would be that Amazon could block or make it difficult for other robot vacuum cleaners to be sold on its online store.
Amazon has been wanting to acquire iRobot for almost two years, the estimated value of the deal could be around 1.7 billion dollars. Europe has until mid-February to announce its considerations on allowing or denying the purchase of iRobot.
iRobot was founded back in 1990 by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Initially, the company focused on creating military robots such as the PackBot. But the turning point in the development of the business took place in 2002, when iRobot showed its first home robot vacuum cleaner Roomba, which quickly became popular. Roomba robots sold a million units by 2004.
