Europe is going to tackle big tech companies harder

In the longer term, it is a story of innovation. “Now there is the idea that the big players are stifling innovation. If the small players are given more opportunities with their products, it should be different. Europe is now a forerunner: it is the first time that such a law has been passed. The US and China are already drawing inspiration from the EU.”

Will it all make much difference? That is unclear. What is certain is that the DMA includes monster fines: up to ten percent of the turnover for violations, and even twenty percent for repeated violations.

Incidentally, the Digital Market Act is the first part of a diptych. There is also another Digital Services Act on the table, which has not yet been voted on. That DSA is not so much about fair competition, but about better protection of the user online.
