While the rollout of 5G is underway in Europe, 6G is already coming to the fore. In this global race, Europe wants to weigh in and be more active than for 5G.
While 5G antennas are just beginning to be deployed in France, sometimes arousing a great deal of mistrust, some are already thinking… of 6G! 6G should be the ultra ultra high speed network (over 1000 gigabits per second) and we are already starting to think about it in China, South Korea, the United States and Europe. In the European Parliament, MEPs from the Renew group – to which the Macronist elected representatives belong – took up the subject last March.
“Shaping the competition on our own terms and our own values”
“While 6G is still in its infancy, we can already see that it has great potential not only to create breakthrough new technologies, but also to create entirely new markets, change business models and society. Commercial adoption of 6G is expected in about ten years. If we are to shape competition on our own terms and our own values, we must start to encourage collaboration between research and industry and remove regulatory barriers where they exist, ”explained Finnish MEP Mauri Pekkarinen, Member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy.
A white paper European Vision for the 6G network ecosystem
The stake for Europe: to weigh in defining the standards of this 6G and not to be left behind as it has been with 5G, for which the Chinese Huawei has taken the world leadership. In order to identify the potential future uses of 6G and the technologies that will need to be developed, Europe has already launched the Hexa-X project at the start of the year, led by Nokia and Ericsson with the support of the European Commission, which brings together 140 telecom players including Orange, Atos and the French Atomic Energy Commission.
This week, a white paper on 6G was published by the 5G Infrastructure Association (5GIA) which called 6G “one of the basic foundations of human societies of the future”. This document, “European Vision for the 6G Network Ecosystem”, covers the key areas related to 6G research from a technical, societal, political and commercial point of view. 6G should arrive by 2030
