Europe Hot! Netherlands riots, clashes break out in Belgium

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaPolice and protesters clash in the streets of Brussels, Belgium, Sunday (11/21/2021). This comes amid demonstrations against the Covid-19 restrictions imposed by the government.

Some 35,000 people are said to have taken part in the demonstrations which began peacefully before the violence broke out. The demonstrators threw stones and smoke bombs which the police responded with water cannons.

“Protesters wearing black hoods threw stones at police as they advanced with water cannons at the main intersection in front of the headquarters of the European Union Commission,” the journalist said. Reuters, quoted Monday (22/11/2021).

Facing the police, the demonstrators chanted slogans of freedom. Some carried placards that read “When Tyranny Becomes Law, Rebellion Becomes Obligation”.

Belgium has been tightening citizen movement since last Wednesday. The country mandates the use of masks and enforces work from home.

The country is now under attack from the 4th wave of Covid-19. Yesterday new infections were back on record, with an average of 13,826 cases daily.

Since the first time Covid-19 occurred, there have been 1,581,500 cases of Covid-19 with 26,568 deaths. The country has a total population of 11.7 million.

Violence against Covid-19 restrictions has also occurred in the Netherlands. For three days, the land of the Windmills has been tense every night because of demonstrations that ended in riots and the burning of public goods.

Even the police in Rotterdam opened fire on the crowd. A number of people were injured and 64 were arrested.

The Dutch government also condemned this violence. What happened was called ‘terrible’.

“The riots and extreme violence against police, riot police and firefighters last night in Rotterdam was appalling,” said Security Minister Ferd Grapperhaus.

“The police and the prosecutor’s office are doing their best to track down, prosecute and punish these rioters.”

The Netherlands itself imposed a partial lockdown on its 17.5 million population last weekend for three weeks. The government also plans to impose a national corona card for the movement of those who have been vaccinated and recovered from Covid-19, but ignores those who test negative.

Quotes Worldometers, the Netherlands recorded 21,794 new cases yesterday and 55 deaths. The total number of Covid-19 cases since the pandemic began in 2020 is around 2.4 million with more than 18,000 deaths.
