Europe has not yet reached Covid-19 peak, warns Center for Disease Control

The worst has not yet come. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is cautious and says that, for now, “there is no indication yet” that the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic has already been reached in Europe.

In a report released this Wednesday, ECDC says that, despite the fact that some countries in the European Union and the European economic area have registered slight decreases in the daily number of dead and infected, the new coronavirus is still there to do more damage.

The organization warns that official figures may be distorted, since mass tests are not being carried out on the population.

“Many countries in the EU and the European economic area are only testing serious cases or hospitalized people, so these trends should be interpreted with caution,” underlines the report.

“Despite initial evidence from Italy and Austria, that the number of cases and deaths are falling, there is still no indication that in Europe the peak of the epidemic has already been reached”, says the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control .

European Center recommends widespread use of masks

ECDC also recommends the widespread use of masks, as a measure to reduce Covid-19 transmission.

At a time when, in Portugal, the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) continues to insist on following the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), which does not advise people without symptoms of infection with the new coronavirus to wear masks; the European Union sends the opposite signal.

In the document made public today (law here in PDF), experts say that the use of surgical masks by people with mild symptoms or without symptoms may be a complementary measure to halt the progress of the new coronavirus. The measure is already followed in European countries such as the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Austria, Slovakia and Bulgaria.
