Oxfam Novib is sounding the alarm about the dangers that young refugees in Europe will face when they turn 18. According to the development aid organization, its own research shows that young refugees from this category often become homeless, end up in dangerous situations and risk being exploited.
The research was conducted in France, Greece, Ireland, Italy and the Netherlands. “If we look at the practice in these five European countries, we see that they are totally failing to protect and support this age group. As a result, they have a lot of trouble integrating and finding their place in Europe,” says Elselijn Mulder of Oxfam Novib.
With regard to the Netherlands, the report notes that a large part of the support offered to minor asylum seekers disappears in one fell swoop as soon as someone turns 18. Those with refugee status lose the assistance of the Nidos Foundation, which, among other things, provides guardianship for unaccompanied minors. Undocumented youths lose their right to shelter, social benefits and education once they turn 18.
Who turns 18 is no longer a child
“For refugee children, turning 18 means a loss of support due to the dramatic absence of legislation to protect them,” Mulder said. “These young people are no longer considered children under the law and end up on the streets without any help.”
According to the report, there is a lack of a coherent European policy. In addition, young people have insufficient access to language lessons and it is often unclear what their rights are. Oxfam Novib wants the EU countries to simplify their asylum procedures, set up guardianship arrangements and create more opportunities for vocational training.
