Europe, Asia, Brazil … Covid-19 infections jump everywhere, except in the United States

The Covid-19 pandemic is resisting. With 410,233 new infections recorded on average daily this week in the world, the indicator jumped 7% compared to last week, reports AFP. This indicator had been halved between mid-January and mid-February, from 743,000 daily cases (week of January 5 to 11) to 362,000 (week of February 12 to 18). Never, since the start of the pandemic, has the number of new infections experienced such a sharp and prolonged drop.

Their number increased in Latin America and the Caribbean (+ 15%, 104,686 daily cases on average), in Asia (+ 13%, 35,348), in Europe (+ 6%, 167,989) and in the Middle East (+ 5%, 32.901). In Oceania, contaminations recorded a significant rebound (+ 29%) but they remain at a very low level (64 new cases). North America is the only continent that has seen a decrease in the number of new cases (-4%, 59,134 daily cases on average). The number of deaths from Covid-19 worldwide continues to decline: -3%, or 60,252 officially recorded over the past week, 8,607 per day on average.

This decrease occurred mainly in North America (-13% with a weekly total of 10,743 deaths), in Asia (-17%, 3,059). Europe, which pays the heaviest weekly tribe, however, sees its number of victims decrease (-4% compared to last week’s assessment, 21,781). The number of deaths increased in Latin America (+ 5%, 20,459 in one week) in the Middle East (+ 19%, 2,176) and in Oceania (+ 250% with seven deaths in total on the continent in one week).

With an 86% increase in the number of contaminations recorded (2,109 daily cases), Pakistan is the country where the epidemic has accelerated the most among those recording a figure greater than 1,000 daily contaminations during the past week. The other countries which recorded strong accelerations are in particular Bulgaria (+ 48%, 2,342), Paraguay (+ 42%, 1,645), the Philippines (+ 40%, 3,197), Jordan (+ 32%, 6,257), Poland (+ 28%, 14,109) and Turkey (+ 26%, 12,833). Moldova is the country which records the largest weekly decrease (-24%, 1,004 daily cases). Malaysia (-20%, 1,631 daily cases), the United Arab Emirates (-13%, 2,541), Israel (-11%, 3,072) and Mexico (-11%, 5,502) and the United Kingdom (- 14%, 5,759).
