Roma, coached by Portuguese José Mourinho, is one of the possible opponents of Benfica and Sporting de Braga in the play-offs for access to the round of 16 of the Europa League.
After having ‘fallen’ from the Champions League, the two Portuguese teams know that they will face one of the runners-up in the Europa League group stage, with the draw taking place on Monday.
The Romans, who have Rui Patrício and Renato Sanches in their squad, were second in Group G and are thus among the teams that can find ‘reds’ and ‘arsenalists’, unlike Sporting, who also have to compete in the ‘play- off’, but coming from the groups of the second European competition.
What is certain is that Benfica and Sporting de Braga avoid ‘sharks’, with three Frenchmen among the possible opponents: Marseille, Toulouse and Rennes.
The Germans from Friburgo, the Czechs from Sparta Praga and the Azeris from Qarabag are the remaining possible opponents for Benfica and Sporting de Braga.
Second placed in Group D of the Europa League, Sporting already knew their possible opponents in the play-offs on Wednesday, unable to face Benfica and Sporting de Braga.
Rafael Leão’s Italian team AC Milan, who were semi-finalists in the ‘Champions’ last season, are, in theory, the opponent to avoid in Monday’s draw.
The Turks from Galatasaray, the French from Lens, the Dutch from Feyenoord, the Swiss from Young Boys and the Ukrainians from Shakhtar Donetsk are Sporting’s other possible opponents.
