Although both the Dragons and the Red Devils are mentioned among the favorites of the Europa League, both teams failed in the first round of the league phase. FC Porto sensationally lost to Bodoe/Glimt 2-3, and Manchester United only drew with Twente Enschede 1-1.
A fierce match in Porto
Thursday’s match was extremely fierce, but neither team managed to win their premiere. Initially, it seemed that guests would reach for them. After 20 minutes, Erik ten Haga’s men were leading 2-0 thanks to goals by Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund.
Less than a quarter of an hour later, the hosts equalized! Pepe Galeno and Samuel Omorodion scored the goals for the team led by Vitor Bruno.
These two players weren’t going to stop there. Five minutes after the start of the second half, they carried out an action that gave the Dragons the lead. Pepe passed and Omorodion scored.
It seemed that FC Porto would win Thursday’s hit, because the guests had to play with ten players from the 81st minute, when Bruno Fernandes received a red card for a too serious foul. This is the second match in a row, after the league match against Tottenham Hotspur, in which the Portuguese midfielder was sent off.
Ten Hag tried to save the situation by introducing… experienced defenders Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans onto the pitch. As it turned out, the first of them scored a goal in added time to tie the game!
Jakub Piotrowski did not score the penalty
From the Polish point of view, an important event of the evening matches was… a wasted penalty kick by Ludogorets Razgrad player Jakub Piotrowski in an away match against Viktoria Pilzno, in which no goals were scored.
Piotrowski had a chance to score a goal in the 52nd minute, but his shot from 11 meters was saved by the hosts’ goalkeeper, Martin Jedlicka.
The Bulgarian champion won the first point in the regular phase, because last week he lost at home to another Czech team – Slavia Prague 0:2.
