Euroleague: Surprise team Zalgiris Kaunas challenges FC Bayern | sport

Andrea Trinchieri (56) directed the fortunes at FC Bayern for three years Basketball. Under the coaching maestro, the double winner even reached the quarterfinals of the Euroleague in 2022!

But the following year Trinchieri had to leave – the Italian’s energy-consuming style had worn off. His successor Pablo Laso (57) was also unable to repeat the international success.

Thursday Trinchieri returns to the premier class with surprise team Zalgiris Kaunas (8.45 p.m., Magenta Sport). And the coach, who won three championship titles with Bamberg from 2015 to 2017 and achieved cult status thanks to his direct style, has “valuable” Munich tips in store for his own fans.

“Fans should visit a good brewery,” advises Trinchieri. “And they should also try currywurst. But the beer is… Lithuanians love beer! You should sit in the brewery and drink a beer at the table. Also to see how things work there. This is truly unique in the world.”

The Kaunas coach is in a good mood, which is understandable. The Lithuanians are sensationally first – and have even strengthened themselves!

NBA star Lonnie Walker (25) is scheduled to make his debut in the sold-out SAP Garden. The shooting guard earned more than $20 million in 341 games in San Antonio, with the LA Lakers and Brooklyn Nets.

But the experienced Euroleague coach also noticed the strong start of his former team. After seven games, FCB is fifth in the table with five wins.

“Bayern are playing surprisingly well,” said Trinchieri, paying tribute. “At the moment they have the best offense in the entire Euroleague. With a small rotation, they found their chemistry very early on.”

In his opinion, one of the main beneficiaries of the short Bayern bench is top scorer Carsen Edwards (26), who leads the rankings with 19.6 points per game. Trinchieri: “He is very aggressive. And with the very short rotation, he knows that he doesn’t have to go to the bench if he misses. That gives a player great confidence.”

The Italian also has words of praise for his successor Gordon Herbert (65): “He is stable, consistent and experienced. He had a very good period with the national team.”

At the same time, Trinchieri points out that the work is different for a Euroleague participant: “The challenge for him now is to play in this rhythm. When I first started coaching in this Euroleague format, I didn’t even have time to brush my teeth because I’m trying to keep up with everything. Still, I was always late. It’s very demanding. But Gordon Herbert is an excellent coach, from a very good school. He knows the game.”
