Greece has not been financially dependent on European aid for more than three years, but the country still has to implement a reform agenda. It was delayed by the corona pandemic and last summer’s fires, but European creditors nevertheless believe that Athens has done enough to benefit from a new tranche of debt relief measures.

“We welcome the new political reforms introduced in the difficult circumstances of the coronavirus pandemic and the catastrophic fires of August,” said Eurogroup President Paschal Donohoe.

The ESM and the EFSF, the predecessor of the emergency fund ESM that the euro countries have set up, lent more than 200 billion euros to Greece from 2010 to 2018. That support has kept the country in the eurozone.
