Member of the European Parliament Jana Toom wants to know from the Minister of the Interior Lauri Läänemets what the country has done to reduce the increasing number of scams.
“More and more people are coming to me who, in some way, were facing an increase in the number of scams in our country. They get the impression that the state cannot protect them and the police will do nothing,” he wrote Thomas in the inquiry sent to the Minister of the Interior Lauri Läänemetsa.
Toom wants to know from the Minister of the Interior what are the reasons for the increase in scams and how things are going in the country as a whole this year and how the Ministry will ‘ assessment of the problem. Toom also asks the minister what measures have been taken and what is planned to be done to stop the growth of this type of crime.
In the letter, Toom relied on Ats Kübarsepa, the head of the Northern Police Prefecture serving Harju County and the city of Tallinn, saying that the number of crimes has increased the most in the last year, which was 22 percent more than in 2022. Last year, 389 scams were committed in Harju County, 339 of them online.
Last year, the number of internet scams increased by 34 percent compared to the previous year. Last year in Tallinn and Harju County, more than 48 million euros of damage was caused to people by scams. Representatives of the older generations are under a special blow.
