Euro Ambassador summoned to Brussels after an open letter to the US President

After signing an open letter to new US President Joe Biden, EU Ambassador to Cuba Alberto Navarro was summoned to Brussels for an explanation, the newspaper says Politico.

The EU ambassador’s summons came after 16 MEPs sent a letter to the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, urging him to fire Navarro. Discontent was caused by the “unacceptable initiative” of the ambassador, who signed a letter urging Biden to take measures to lift restrictions against Cuba. The source of the publication did not specify whether the ambassador would be fired, but he believes that his summons to Brussels can be viewed as a severe reprimand.

Borrell himself at a recent press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke out against the anti-Cuban US embargo. However, Navarro’s personal initiative to sign a letter of demands for the American leader was surprising. It is noted that among the persons who signed the letter to the US President, mainly the Cuban intelligentsia: artists, professors, journalists and students.

US restrictions on doing business and travel to Cuba were lifted by US President Barack Obama in 2014, but were re-imposed by Donald Trump in 2017.
