The Euro 7 regulations for vehicles circulating in the EU is a very hot and heartfelt topic, which has raised quite a few – even conflicting – opinions in recent weeks. These are rules that will be even stricter than the current ones, in the area of vehicle circulation and pollution, which for many are exaggerated.
Among those who criticize the Euro 7 there is also Carlos Tavares, the CEO of Stellantis, according to whom the Euro 7 should be canceled and, indeed, Europe should only be “stronger against Chinese cars”. The intervention of the manager comes on the sidelines of the Paris Motor Show: “We need reciprocity, there is no reason to make it easy to access the Old Continent without having the opposite in exchange”.
Chinese electric cars in Europe: what Tavares thinks
According to the CEO of Stellantis, Europe should be much stronger than the competition from Chinese manufacturers. A message that comes loud and clear, especially in consequence of the fact that we saw at the Paris Motor Show 2022 officially debut in our continent two major brands of the Asian country, with their cars for Europe: let’s talk about BYD and Great Wall Motors.
According to Tavares there is a need for reciprocity, because there is no reason to make access to the European market so easy for Chinese carmakers, especially because we – on the contrary – we get nothing in return. CEO Tavares says: “We want the same conditions, as Chinese manufacturers are always welcome in Europe”; according to him, only European automotive companies should be able to enter the Chinese market under the exact same conditions. And that’s not the case at the moment. However, Carlos Tavares comments on a certainly difficult situation, but the CEO makes no secret of it, and it is not the first time that he has criticized China and his actions.
In fact, let’s not forget that the Portuguese manager at the head of Stellantis already claimed a few months ago that the microchip crisis it was the responsibility of the Chinese: “Semiconductor manufacturers indicate double-digit production increases. But we don’t see results through suppliers. The conclusion? There is someone doing stocks“, These are his considerations.
The new European anti-pollution regulations: what Carlos Tavares thinks
So far we have talked about the tough stance taken by the CEO of Stellantis towards Chinese auto manufacturers. The manager makes no secret of it, but neither is it the only argument for which he is trying to assert his reasons for him. Just on the sidelines of the 2022 Paris Motor Show, Carlos Tavares also spoke out against the new Euro 7 anti-pollution legislation, that the European Parliament is expected to present on 26 October.
Regulations that, according to Tavares – and not only – are too stringent and difficult for car manufacturers to comply with: “They are useless, they must be canceled. Yes, Euro 7 simply needs to be canceled. I know that many do not share this position, but I believe it is a position of common sense. Euro 7 must be eliminated. The real question today is knowing what European leaders are doing to stimulate the European market. This is the key question. The real problem today, according to the CEO of Stellantis, is that “European governments accept that our market continues to shrink”, especially in the face of major global competitors, such as those coming from the Chinese market.
