Euro 2022: France vs Iceland, a guaranteed place for the quarterfinals but a weakened EDF

Iceland will be looking for their first win in Group D against France, who have already secured their top spot with two wins.

France against Iceland: the reunion

Second-placed Iceland are looking for their first victory in Group D. Having drawn 1-1 with Belgium and Italy, they have led in both encounters. While France secured first place thanks to two victories against Italy (5-1) and Belgium (2-1).

The two countries meet for the second consecutive time in a group stage of the EURO after meeting on the first day in Tilburg five years ago to the day. Les Bleues then won 1-0 on July 18, 2017, Eugénie Le Sommer converting a penalty in the 86th minute after Amandine Henry was knocked down in the box.

The two teams are meeting for the third time at a EURO, having faced each other on Matchday 1 in 2009. Iceland, in their first match at a major tournament, opened the scoring in Tampere with a header by Hólmfrídur Magnúsdóttir in the sixth minute, before Camille Abily equalized from the penalty spot 12 minutes later. Les Bleues took the lead shortly after the break with another penalty, this time converted by Sonia Bompastor (53), before Louisa Nécib (67) added an impressive third goal.

Iceland have finished last in their group, with France in second place, the last two times the two teams have been drawn together in a EURO group stage.
France’s wins over Iceland at EURO 2009 and eight years later were their only victories in those tournaments.

A guaranteed victory even without Katoto?

Hard blow for the French. Star striker Marie-Antoinette Katoto, who suffered a knee injury against Belgium, will miss the remainder of the tournament.

Katoto, who is one of France’s key players with 26 goals in 32 caps for her country. Limped in Thursday’s 2-1 win over Belgium in the first half and was found to have damaged his meniscus and an internal ligament.

France will have to go through the knockout stages without their key player. Corinne Deacon’s side have a top-notch attack, with Katoto’s club teammates Sandy Baltimore and Kadidiatou Diani – who scored against Belgium – also in the squad.
