Euro 2021: The Chelsea stars looking for a European double

Seven Chelsea players are looking to complete a European Championship and Champions League double as England take on Italy at Wembley this Sunday.

Jorginho, Emerson Palmieri, Mason Mount, Ben Chilwell and Reece James are looking to follow on from their European Cup glory with their club after defeating Manchester City in May by winning Euro 2020.

You’d assume that players who have been successful with their clubs usually go on to win trophies on the international stage the same season, it isn’t a common occurrence.

Only seven players have ever completed a European Championship-European Cup double since the inception of the international tournament in 1960.

Luis Suarez was the first to achieve the feat after he won the European Cup with Inter and then the European Championship with Spain in 1964.

The next players to do it were Ronald Koeman, Barry van Aerle, Hans van Breucklen and Gerald Vanenburg, all of whome played for PSV Eindhoven and the Netherlands, winning the European Championship and European Cup in 1988.

Juan Mata and Fernando Torres added their names to the list in 2012 with Chelsea and Spain and the most recent pair were Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe in 2016 with Real Madrid and Portugal.

There are four players who could be in for a second final defeat this Sunday, however, with Raheem Sterling, Kyle Walker, John Stones and Phil Foden all already having lost the Champions League final with Manchester City.

Only Michael Ballack and Antoine Griezmann have experienced this kind of heartache before, with the German losing two finals with Chelsea and Germany in 2008 and the Frenchman with Atletico Madrid and France in 2016
