The match was even from the beginning, the Austrians played boldly, but the opponent did not give them much space. The first vertical Barella sent Immobile to escape, but the Italian striker did not reach the ball. After 11 minutes, Spinazzola got through on the right and was very close to equalizing for the home side, but didn’t get the shot away. The Italian team took the lead by 18 minutes into the game by 1 to 0, as Barella elegantly received a long range pass through the middle, finishing off with a half-volley shot just below the bar. However, Bachmann made a spectacular save. This was a good period for the visitors, with several opportunities to take the lead, particularly when Immobile slipped through the defense on the right to come up alone against 32 minutes into the match. The Austrians then took over a bit at the end of the half, but did not show much in the offensive.
In the second half, Franco Foda’s charges had their first chance. Alaba kicked a direct kick from a good position from the penalty area, but in addition to the wall, he also kicked the goal. The resistance of the Austrians to the Italians was still strong, in the defensive they managed to fill the premises, the favorite patiently waited for a suitable opportunity. In the 65th minute, he was shocked by Arnautovič, who overcame Donnarumma’s head, but VAR revealed a tight offside of the Austrian. Coach Mancini responded by withdrawing Verrati and Barella, and Pessina and Locatelli came on the lawn. However, even that did not help the favorite to overcome the tenacious resistance of Austria, and Mancini then decided to take another double rotation. However, Chiesa and Belotti did not bring the coveted goal for “Squadra azzurru”.
He extended the shot for Chiesa in overtime, Bachmann covered his shot, but a few seconds later the same player handled the ball well in the penalty area and scored the lead with a left hand. Bachmann then brilliantly eliminated Insigne’s direct kick, but a few seconds later Pessina overtook him for the second time.
At the beginning of the second part of the overtime, Schaub could have reduced, but Donnarumma hit well. The Austrians then had another chance, but even Sabitzer didn’t get the ball into the net. The score was closed by the exact head of Kalajdžič after the corner kick, the Austrian footballers did not manage to do more.
