Leading German health expert Karl Lauterbach has sharply criticized the European Football Union (UEFA) for its allegedly ignorant approach to the coronavirus pandemic. He does not like the fact that several European Championship matches were played in front of full stands, although the continent is threatened by another wave of a pandemic for more contagious delta variants.
“There is a shadow over this championship and UEFA is responsible for the deaths due to its ignorant approach. We have to make that clear. In my opinion, UEFA has failed.” announced according to DPA Lauterbach for the football magazine 11Freunde. According to a German expert, the pandemic may have seemed gone during the tournament, but this is not the case. “The European Championships have been misused for this fatal signal.”
For Lauterbach, the participation of more than 60,000 spectators in Sunday’s final match of the European Championships between England and Italy in London is a danger. “Wembley is completely out of control,” claims a German expert. On the other hand, he appreciated the hygienic concept of fan participation in the next Bundesliga: “I’m sure we can consider him safe.”
Before the new season, the representatives of the German federal states agreed that the stadiums will be able to fill up to half their capacity in Bundesliga duels, but with a maximum of 25,000 spectators. Unvaccinated visitors and people after overcoming the disease will have to submit a negative test result before entering the stands.
