It wasn’t enough for handball second division team Eulen Ludwigshafen to get their third away win of the season in Upper Franconia. At fourth-placed HSC 2000 Coburg, coach Johannes Wohlrab’s team lost 31:37 (17:20).
The Owls were behind from kick-off in front of 1,817 spectators in the HUK-Coburg-Arena, but they couldn’t be shaken off for a long time. After Alexander Falk’s goal into the empty HSC goal to make it 9:9 (13th), Owls half-left Mex Raguse could have taken the lead shortly afterwards on the counterattack alone in front of goalkeeper Kristian van der Merwe. But his throw only landed on the post. Afterwards, Coach Jan Gorr’s Coburg team increasingly took over command in the high-scoring first half, expanded their lead to three goals and held it until the break (20:17). In the last minutes of the game before the half-time whistle, Eulen center Tom Bergner was shown a red card for his tough defense against Jakob Knauer (hand in his face).
The Ludwigshafen team went into the second half with the risk of a time penalty and couldn’t get any closer. There was often a threat of time being played, and they missed some good chances to throw, even when they were in the majority. Coburg further extended their lead (25:21, 43rd) and held on until the end – also because Julius Meyer-Siebert was missing from the Eulen defense after his third time penalty (45th).
The best Eulen goal scorers were Raguse (7), Falk and Jannek Klein (5 each), while on the Coburg side right winger Florian Billek (10/3) as well as Felix Jaeger and Arkadiusz Ossowski (5 each) scored most often.
