Due
of a pelvis injury, Eugene Laverty’s Superbike career ended on Sunday at Phillip Island. The 36-year-old crashed at the first corner of the Australian track following an accident with Xavi Fores on lap 18 of the second race of the Australian Round, the last race of the season.
Laverty, who had already said goodbye to racing earlier this year, ended his last WSBK race carried on a stretcher, conscious, to the nearest hospital. The race was canceled and victory was handed to champion Alvaro Bautista, who took his 16th win of the season.
On social media, WSBK posted a note stating that the rider had been diagnosed with a pelvic injury. The Northern Irish driver thus wrapped up his racing career before starting a new chapter next year with the same team, Bonovo MGM BMW, as driver coach.
