EU wants to impose sanctions against Turkey because of its cooperation with Russia – Financial Times

European officials are worried about the friendly relations between the two countries in energy, finance and trade.

EU considers imposing sanctions against Turkey because of her cooperation with the aggressor country, which invaded Ukraine on February 24 without declaring war.

How writes British edition of the Financial Times, European officials are worried because of the friendly relations between the two countries in the field of energy, finance and trade.

Official negotiations on the imposition of sanctions against Turkey in the European Union have not yet been held, however, according to the sources of the publication, they have already decided how to “punish” Ankara for this – to put pressure on Western companies and banks to leave the Turkish market.

Since the beginning of a full-scale war in Ukraine, the Turkish authorities have adhered to the so-called “balanced neutrality.” Erdogan provided Istanbul as negotiation platform to end the war, also the country helped in unblocking Ukrainian ports.

However, as journalists note, this is where fears come from that “balanced neutrality” could turn Russia into a “window of opportunity” to bypass sanctions.

Russia asks Turkey to help circumvent sanctions

About it informed The Washington Post, citing the interception of Ukrainian intelligence on the eve of the talks between the presidents of Russia and Turkey. In particular, the aggressor country is asking for permission to buy shares in Turkish refineries, oil terminals and tanks.

The publication notes that so far it does not see any signs that Turkey will support these agreements, since in this way it will put its own banks and companies in the country at risk of secondary sanctions and block their access to Western markets.
