– Twitter must implement clear rules for users, significantly strengthen content moderation and protect freedom of expression, vigorously tackle disinformation and limit targeted advertising, says EU Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton.
Breton held a video call with Elon Musk on Wednesday in which he explained what work remains before Twitter is in line with EU data security laws.
Musk previously issued a mission statement in which he stressed that Twitter will comply with the EU’s new Digital Services Act (DSA), which comes into effect next year.
EU data security laws and DSAs set a clear set of requirements for large online businesses. Among other things, they target harmful content, privacy, and demand transparency about algorithms.
EU authorities in Brussels fear Musk’s stance on what speech is allowed could undermine the fight against propaganda, hate speech and cyberism.
