EU Summit Reaches ‘Principled Decision’ on 50 Billion Euro Fund for Ukraine, Says Ukrainian Foreign Ministry

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine believes that at the EU summit a “principled decision” was nevertheless reached on the creation of a Ukrainian fund of 50 billion euros for 2024-2027.

Details: The Foreign Ministry said that the fundamental decision on 50 billion euros is “a clear signal that financial support for Ukraine from the European Union will continue.”

“We expect the completion of all necessary legal procedures in January 2024, which will allow us to receive appropriate funding as quickly as possible,” the department noted.

The Foreign Ministry clarified that the 50 billion euros that will be allocated by the European Union for Ukraine will be used, in particular, to support macroeconomic stability, the restoration and modernization of our state, as well as accelerating integration into the EU.

The Foreign Ministry also welcomed the agreement on the 12th package of EU sanctions at the summit and the commitment of the European Union and its member states to continue to meet the urgent military and defense needs of Ukraine, in particular through the European Peace Fund (EPF) and the Military Assistance Mission, as well as through bilateral assistance from member states.

“We call on the EU to approve the new eighth tranche of assistance under the European Peace Fund as quickly as possible. We support the European Council’s proposal to accelerate work on reforming the EPF and increasing its funding to best meet Ukraine’s military needs,” the statement said.

Let us recall that the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, at the end of the negotiations between EU leaders, which lasted late into the night, said that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban didn’t allow me to accept EU budget decision, which would include a medium-term assistance program for Ukraine worth 50 billion euros.

In this regard, the leaders agreed on an extraordinary summit in January dedicated to this issue.

Michel called on Ukraine see a positive signal in the vote, despite the position of Hungary, because the other 26 countries, according to him, are ready to support the decision.

EU leaders believe they it will still work agree on a financial support program for Ukraine worth 50 billion euros, including the voice of Hungary, and this could happen in January 2024.
