The European Union’s foreign policy official, Joseph Borrell, confirmed on Monday that the Union’s ambassador to Khartoum was subjected to an “assault”, while the country is witnessing a state of chaos due to fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.

“A few hours ago, the EU ambassador to Sudan was attacked at his residence,” Borrell said, adding that “this constitutes a grave breach of the Vienna Convention.”

The European official stressed that the security of diplomatic premises and personnel is the main responsibility of the Sudanese authorities and an obligation under international law.

And he added that civilians in Sudan urgently called for a cease-fire in order to preserve the safety of citizens and to allow for mediation efforts.

He pointed out that the European Union is working to persuade each side to seriously consider a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons and to encourage dialogue.

International calls followed for both sides of the conflict in Sudan to renounce violence and sit at the dialogue table, while the conflict in Sudan raises international concerns about the worsening of the humanitarian situation in the country, especially since the economic situation has deteriorated rapidly for years without indications of an imminent breakthrough.

About a hundred civilians were killed in Sudan, where gunfire and explosions continue to be heard in Khartoum on Monday, on the third day of fighting between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the armed Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
