EU states are negotiating in Vienna for more monitoring of asylum seekers – policy

Since the refugee crisis in 2015 and 2016, the number of refugees within the European Union has been steadily declining. While in 2016 there were still 1.3 million people seeking asylum, in 2020 – there are no figures for 2021 – there will only be around 472,000. Nevertheless, migration policy within the EU is to be tightened. Working together against illegal migration and people smuggling – that’s what Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) says is the goal of a conference with other EU countries that will take place in Vienna on Monday and Tuesday.
