Israel to export natural gas to the European Union. The contract will be signed today at a conference in Egypt. The transport has to go through that country. In Egypt, natural gas can be liquefied so that it can be shipped to Europe. It has not been disclosed how much gas Israel will supply.
The deal has been negotiated for a month, wrote The Times of Israël yesterday. Negotiations are expected to be concluded yesterday when Israeli Energy Minister Elharrar met President von der Leyen of the European Commission in Jerusalem.
Von der Leyen said the EU is exploring ways to expand energy cooperation with Israel. The construction of a gas pipeline and electricity cable across the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea is being considered. They would then have to walk to Greece via Cyprus. “The Kremlin used our reliance on fossil fuels from Russia to blackmail us,” von der Leyen said. “But that only strengthens our resolve to break free from it.”
