EU shoots expensive New York mansion | Abroad

The renovated city palace was to serve as a new home for the EU ambassador to the United Nations. The EU Foreign Service is currently renting a house for this high-ranking diplomat, but this building would be a size too small for official receptions of more than ten people. Moreover, Brussels thought it was high time to acquire a residence that would be comparable to that of ambassadors from member states.

A spacious balcony is a rarity in Manhattan.

There was no shortage of space in the intended building. The 540-square-foot mansion is located in the upscale Upper East Side neighborhood and features a garden with outdoor kitchen, a lavish dining room with Ralph Lauren leather wallpaper and eight bathrooms. And how ironic: the real estate agent’s photos show a spacious room with Union Jack (British flag) as a rug.

But unfortunately for the ambassador: the move to the stately building has been cancelled. It is up to Member States and the European Parliament to close such a real estate deal, but Brussels met enormous resistance against the multi-million dollar purchase. During a meeting of member states, a number of representatives present managed to find comparable properties for a much lower price with ease. The broker in New York also states on its website that the property is more than 500 percent more expensive compared to other homes in the area.

Although the European Union is not a country, it does have the right to speak at the UN as an observer member.
