EU sends planes to fight Sardinia forest fires | Abroad

Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said on Sunday that firefighting planes could help. France already sent two planes. According to the European Commission, Greece is now also sending two aircraft.

In the night from Saturday to Sunday, 400 people had to leave their homes due to the fires. Hundreds more residents of the affected area had to be evacuated on Sunday. The forest fires rage near Cuglieri, among other places. The village of Sennariolo, north of Cuglieri, was completely evacuated.

According to local media, properties have been damaged and farmers have lost crops and livestock in the blaze. According to the European Commission, about 4000 hectares of forest have burned down so far. No serious injuries or deaths have yet been reported.

The forest fires are being fought by fire fighting helicopters and hundreds of firefighters and volunteers.
