What the EU is doing to foster human-centric AI

The EU’s first draft ⁢Regulation on AI is part of a wider effort to⁣ develop human-centric AI⁤ by eliminating mistakes and biases to ensure it is safe and trustworthy. ⁣The regulation includes requirements to minimise the risk of algorithmic discrimination, in particular in…Powerful AI models, such as ‍OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google‌ Gemini, also face extra ⁤obligations, such as having to be more transparent about how models are trained.

Google and Meta, the owner of Facebook, have been criticising the code. Meta’s top lobbyist Joel Kaplan said in Brussels earlier this month that the code risked⁢ imposing “unworkable and technically unfeasible requirements”.

But Virkkunen insisted the deregulatory push is driven by the EU’s own ambition to enhance its⁢ competitiveness, and not “dependent on ⁤the US”.

“We are very ‍committed to cut bureaucracy and red tape,” she said.

Brussels had no plans to weaken⁢ enforcement of its rules governing online‌ platforms,⁤ which “are working” to ensure a level playing field, she said.

So ⁣far,‌ big Tech has been largely complying with EU rules, given that the bloc‌ “is one ⁢of the biggest markets” for US companies.

“We are open for business, but we also want to make sure that we are protecting ⁣our own values and our way of life,” Virkkunen said.

“Our digital world ‍can’t ⁤be a wild west where there are no rules.”

Global Collaboration and AI Regulations: A ⁤Deep Dive

In the rapidly evolving landscape ‍of artificial intelligence, regulatory frameworks are emerging to ensure that AI advancement ⁣aligns with human ‌and planetary interests. This interview with⁣ Dr.‍ Emma ‍Thompson,a leading expert in AI ethics and regulation, explores the latest developments and challenges‍ in AI governance.

International Collaboration on AI Regulations

Senior Editor,World-Today-News.com: ⁤ Dr.‌ Thompson, the World Economic Forum highlighted the need for international collaboration to ‌steer AI’s development. How critical is this collaboration in shaping AI regulations?

dr. Emma ‌Thompson: Collaboration is essential. AI doesn’t recognize national borders, and its impact is global. Harmonizing ‍diverse views and creating a unified framework can address challenges at the‍ intersection of technology, privacy, and rights. Without international cooperation, we risk a fragmented regulatory landscape that could hinder‌ innovation and create loopholes for unethical practices.

AI’s Role in Climate Action⁣ and ⁢Lasting Growth

Senior Editor, World-Today-News.com: The World Economic Forum⁣ also discussed AI’s potential in providing⁤ vital data for climate action and sustainable growth through Earth Observation. How⁢ is AI transforming this field?

Dr. ‌Emma Thompson: AI is revolutionizing Earth Observation by analyzing vast⁤ amounts of data from new ⁤satellites and advanced sensors. ⁢It can answer complex questions ‌about our‌ habitat, provide intuitive user interfaces for non-expert users, ⁢and drive‍ business model innovation. As ⁣an example, AI can help monitor deforestation, track carbon emissions, and optimize resource management,‍ all of which are crucial for sustainable growth and climate ‌action.

EU’s Efforts to Foster Human-Centric AI

Senior editor, World-Today-News.com: The EU⁣ has ⁤been proactive in developing ‌human-centric AI regulations. Can you discuss the EU’s approach and its implications?

Dr. Emma Thompson: The EU’s draft⁣ Regulation on AI is a significant step ⁣towards ensuring AI ⁢is‌ safe and trustworthy. It aims to ⁣eliminate mistakes and⁤ biases, particularly in algorithmic discrimination. Powerful AI ‍models like ‌OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google Gemini face additional obligations, such as enhanced transparency. This⁣ regulation reflects ⁤the EU’s commitment to protecting fundamental rights while fostering innovation. Though, there’s been criticism‍ from ‍tech giants like google‌ and Meta, who argue‌ that some requirements are unworkable. The EU’s response underscores ⁣its determination to balance competitiveness with stringent ⁣ethical standards.

Balancing Innovation and Regulation

Senior Editor, World-Today-News.com: How do you see the balance between innovation ‍and ‌regulation playing out in‍ the near future?
